Welcome To Heartland Equine Rescue, Inc.

Our rescue works to assist Equine in need in/around the Southern Indiana area and surrounding states. We work with Law Enforcement and Individual Owners. We take in any breed of equine.

Our Mission

Heartland Equine Rescue, Inc. believes that horses deserve a second chance. Our goal is to give horses a safe place to land, rehabilitate them, retrain them and rehome them. If a horse is unable to be rehomed due to age or medical condition and has a quality of life, our rescue will house them for the remainder of their lifetime.

DIANA

More photo’s coming soon.

She’s a beautiful little pony who needs someone who wants to bond and spend some one on one time with her. She gets along with others but is more at the top of the totem pole. She is very shy but once caught is able to be haltered and lead roped.

Adoption Fee: $250.00

FRANNIE

Frannie - Adoption Fee $2,200.

Andalusian Mare, 15 Hands, 17 years old

Frannie is looking for her forever person. She is a lovely Andalusian mare who truly enjoys people. She has a sturdy build and is barefoot sound. She is a fun trail horse and enjoys exploring and trail riding with her human partner. She is best suited for an intermediate experienced rider as she can be strong willed. She is happiest with a rider who will be her leader. She has handled any type of trail we have put her on. She is surefooted with tough obstacles, soggy trails or difficult terrain. She loves a challenge and going new places. She is a natural jumper and will pop over anything. She is fine with traffic, farm equipment and atvs. She rides well with other horses and will lead or follow. She has courage and confidence in the arena or on the trail. She works well in the arena. She is intelligent and very trainable. She would be a great trail obstacle mount but could go in any direction.

She is up to date on vaccinations, coggins, worming, dental and trims. She stands tied to a trailer, rack or overhead. She loads and rides well in trailer. Gets along with geldings or mares.

HONEY

She is a 12-14yo Welsh Pony. Gorgeous Blue Eyes. She is at training right now to learn to ride. She will be available after training. She came to us after she was found to be very neglected. She has recovered well.

Adoption Fee: TBD

HAZEL - Pasture Companion Only

While Hazel did exceptionally well in training, it was discovered she has a bone chip near her hip area and can no longer have weight upon her back. She is easy to handle and gets along with mares or gelding. She is looking for a Pasture Pet home only.

Adoption Fee: $350.

Rosie is a mid 20’s gal that would love to find a pasture pet only home. She can be sat on and walked around on, and does well. She cannot be on lush pasture. She would be perfect for a very scarce pasture type setting, or nice sized dry lot area. She gets along with horses or mini’s. She loves to be groomed and is safe to handle.

Adoption Fee: $300.

For Adoption - Sancho & Merlin

Sancho is a 15 yr old gelding miniature horse. He is very social, curious, loves to be with people and has a wonderful sense of horse humor. He has Cushings which is controlled with medication. Limited grass with grazing muzzle always. Sancho is like a Hoover vacuum where grass is concerned. He needs access to shelter and stands well for the farrier. He and Merlin are a bonded pair.

Merlin is the old man of the group. He’s a 17 yr old gelding miniature horse. Well mannered, quiet temperament, super sweet and loving. Merlin is cart trained, however, he would benefit from a refresher course. He loves attention. Stands well for the farrier. Ideal home would provide access to dry lot. Limited amount of pasture turn out with grazing muzzle and access to shelter. He and Sancho are a bonded pair.

HORSES IN REHAB

Grace - 13yo TWH Mare. She came to us with a foal. Her foal has since been adopted. Mama is a loving horse, easy to handle and just the sweetest personality ever!! Sadly she has DSLD a condition that is not treatable. At this time though she is comfortable and the Vet has made a few suggestions for us to help her continue to thrive. She still needs to gain some weight as well while in rehab.

Daphne - 12yo Jenny. UPDATE: BABY JACK BORN 2/19/2025 AT 2:59PM!!!! Mama & baby are doing great!! She is such a good mama. She is just learning to start to trust us and pick up her feet. She came to us in very poor condition with sores on her body, limping so badly she could barely walk off the trailer. She will remain in rehab at this time due to her condition.

Poppy - She is one of the “lucky 5” that came from a trader’s lot. She has progressed in letting females get close to her and even touch her. She is at the training facility and they will be doing more extensive work with her in spring (2025) when temps are a bit warmer to see if they can get her to come around for being a riding partner.

Mr. Poppie!! This blind sweetheart is doing well in his foster home. He is making progress and seems to have a few favorite folks in his life that he feels safe with. We hope he continues to make progress and realize that people aren’t bad. He is very sweet, just very shy. We would consider a loving home that has experience with blind equine.

PERMANENT RESIDENTS

Chi Chi is a 30yo Paso Fino Gelding. He has Cushings Disease, and requires a special diet due to his age. He will remain with Heartland for the remainder of his life.

Susie came to us from a local auction. She was quite thin and so afraid of people. It took almost an hour to walk her to the trailer step by step with reassuring voices. She has taken a very long time to trust the people she lives with and therefore we feel its in her best interest to remain with us. She just isn’t sure about strangers still. She is a joy to be around and while still hard to catch at times we love her.

Annie is a senior Belgian Mare that came to us in pretty poor condition, and she is also blind. She is very trusting now of her foster home folks, and loves her other horse friends. She will remain with us for the remainder of her lifetime.

Bradley & Brandy came to us in 2020 thru a neglect case. They are mother/daughter pair. Brandy had an extensive hoof infection which went into her leg, and Bradley needs injections due to a coffin bone issue. Both are the sweetest horses you’d ever want to meet but due to their special needs, they will remain with us for their lifetime.

Did you know about our program?

Heartland Equine offers an “Owner Assisted Placement Program”. Let’s be honest, rescues are often full and we can’t always say “yes” to taking in an owner surrender. So we offer a program where we agree to help place your horse. We require adoption application and contract as we would for a horse in our program and your horse can be rehomed “SAFELY”. If there is an urgent need to immediately place the horse and we cannot assist, we will network to help you find options to place the horse safely with someone else.
