Welcome To Heartland Equine Rescue, Inc.

Our rescue works to assist Equine in need in/around the Southern Indiana area and surrounding states.

We have locations in Oakland City, IN and Corydon, IN and two satellite locations with other board members in Southern Indiana that are foster specific to the Heartland Horses. We do accept volunteers.

Our Mission

Heartland Equine Rescue, Inc. believes that horses deserve a second chance. Our goal is to give horses a safe place to land, rehabilitate them, retrain them and rehome them. If a horse is unable to be rehomed due to age or medical condition and has a quality of life, our rescue will house them for the remainder of their lifetime.

Make a donation.

Our organization cannot do the work we do without your support. We don’t receive any state or federal funding and none of our volunteers or board members receive a salary. Every dime donated goes to the horses in our care. We believe in transparency and frequently post our Vet Bills or feed bills on our Facebook page. If you have any questions about what our donations are used for, please use the contact form to get in touch with us!

Thank you - It takes a community to save these horses.

"PASTURE COMPANION ONLY"

Dolly is a 24yo Mare that came into the rescue the fall of 2022. The Vet feels she has an old ligament injury that doesn't affect her during normal activities, but recommended she not be ridden. That being said, Dolly is easy to handle, loads well, LOVES to be groomed, and does well for the farrier. She would make anyone a lovely companion who just wants to enjoy a beautiful horse.

Adoption Fee: $300.

Blue Haze of Fire, aka Hazel
Thoroughbred Mare (Reg Jockey Club), OTTB
15.1H
12 years old
Grey

Adoption Fee: $1,500.

Broke to ride for an advanced beginner. Friendly, calm and dependable. She works well in the arena or on the trail. She has exceeded our hopes in training and has done so well. She would make someone a wonderful companion and trail partner. More whoa than go. She is happy to be a trail leader or bring up the rear. Fine with traffic and atvs. She has a lovely trot and canter. She will easily pick up her leads. She is up to date on vaccinations, dental and feet. Stands quietly for mounting. Stands tied, loads, rides well in trailer. Gets along with geldings or mares. She really loves people and deserves to find her person to bond with and live a beautiful life. A true jewel of a mare.

HORSES IN REHAB

EBONY - 20yo Rocky Mt. Mare. We are waiting on results of her bloodwork to know how to proceed with her rebab.

UPDATE: Ebony is being treated for EPM at this time and doing a bit better than she initially was.

Susie is a jenny that came in from an auction situation. She had a neurological condition which medication has seemed to have kept under control now. She is still not trusting of people at this time. She prefers the companion of other equine, but not so much humans. We hope to keep working with her so at some point she may become adoptable.

Horses In Rehab

GIDEON - He came to us with a severe leg injury that wasn’t being treated properly. He is currently undergoing debriding and bandage changes regular at the Vets Office. He is doing very well all things considered.

Azalea came to us in a bit of an emaciated condition. She has already had a dental and most likely will be having surgery to remove her right eye that she is blind in and suspected squamous cell carcinoma. Watch for updates on this sweet gal!!

Thunder is a 12 yo blind mini gelding. He came to us after his owner who was very ill could no longer care for him. We are working with Thunder to feel more secure around strangers and ground manners. We hope to have this boy up for adoption later this year.

Chi Chi is a 28yo Paso Fino Gelding. He is currently in rehab to gain some weight.

Jolene is a 28yo mare that has no teeth. She has to get mash 3xs a day to continue to gain weight and keep weight on. She is very healthy otherwise. She is such a sweet well mannered horse.

Bradley & Brandy

This pair came to us in very poor condition. They have been available as pasture pets/companions for some time now but the right home hasn’t come along. Recently Bradley has shown severe arthritis in his right front, with degenerating coffin bone. He has received an injection which has really helped him move freely again. Due to their age (mid 2o’s) and medical needs they will remain in Heartland Equine at this time unless the right home/person would come along that could properly care for both of their needs.

Permanent Residents

Kat is a 25yo Appy Mare who is blind in both eyes. She came to the rescue when her owner could no longer provide care to her. Kat used to work with disabled kids, and 4H. She is very sweet and will remain with us for her lifetime due to her condition.

Foxy is a mare in her upper 20’s who has been diagnosed with Cushings Disease. She is currently on medication for her condition. She is a super sweet mare who is always eager for love and attention.

Lightening, 22yo Gelding, came to us when his owner sadly passed away. It took us 2 months to get him to at least trust one of us. He can be very leery of strangers, and almost dangerous at times. For that reason he will remain in the rescue for the remainder of his lifetime.

Halo came to us in need of surgery on both ligaments in her legs. She had a successful surgery, however she needs regular maintenance and farrier care to keep her in sound condition. She is as sassy as she is cute!

Jolene - February 2024

OWEN - He is probably one of our most severe neglect cases. He came into the rescue in Summer 2019 with a huge tumor in/around his ear. After 2 years of fighting with it, injections, surgery, chemo shots he is pretty much cancer free! He has a small spot that gets treated with a special cream. He will remain with us due to his special needs.

Did you know about our programs?

Heartland Equine Rescue works with those in our community who may have fallen on hard times. When we are able we will assist with Feed or Medical or Farrier care. We feel that it is better for horses to stay in loving homes if we can provide some temporary help to their owners.
Look for more information coming soon on “Annie’s Fund”. This fund will be specifically under our 501c3 organization and be specific for helping those horses with owners that are in need. The fund is in honor of a very special lady who spent her life advocating for Equine.

Heartland Equine also offers an “Owner Assisted Placement Program”. Let’s be honest, rescues are often full and we can’t always say “yes” to taking in an owner surrender. So we offer a program where we agree to help place your horse. We require adoption application and contract as we would for a horse in our program and your horse can be rehomed “SAFELY”. If there is an urgent need to immediately place the horse and we cannot assist, we will network to help you find options to place the horse safely with someone else.

ANNIE’S FUND

Annie’s Fund is a program designed to help people & their horses “short term” with Vetting, Farrier, Housing with financial assistance. Each case is reviewed and discussed with our team members. The fund is limited so unfortunately we cannot always help everyone, but we will do our best to accommodate your situation. Please contact us at our email here on the page and we will discuss things further with you. Our goal with this fund is to help horses remain in their current loving homes versus having to enter a rescue or be sold where their future safety might be questionable.

PLEASE EMAIL US FOR AN APPLICATION IF YOU ARE NEEDING ASSISTANCE AT: HEARTLANDEQUINE@YAHOO.COM
